“7am at Java Hut” is the larger one of two oil paintings done of Java Hut, the funky coffee place in Mapua. For a group of men it has become tradition to meet in the morning at 7am when the shop opens to grab a coffee and then go for a walk to the waterfront. This painting shows the view from Atawhai, Nelson, over the Nelson Port towards the Boulder Bank. The buildings at the Nelson Port are shown in an old fashion manner with the typical reddish New Zealand roofs. Today the port looks more industrial than it is depicted in this painting. Early Morning at Java Hut is the 6th painting I have been working on of this fabulous little coffee shop in Mapua. The painting shows the local crowd that meets regularly in the early morning to have a coffee before going for a walk along the waterfront. In this case it is winter and the sun hasn't come up yet.
