The building that houses Java Hut was originally a bank in Wakefield and later moved to its current location.
Early Morning at Java Hut is the 6th painting I have been working on of this fabulous little coffee shop in Mapua. The painting shows the local crowd that meets regularly in the early morning to have a coffee before going for a walk along the waterfront. In this case it is winter and the sun hasn't come up yet. Cashmere Bay captures an early morning in May 2024 at Lake Brunner, Moana. It was gorgeous to paint at this beautiful location, overcast, with no wind and only a few black swans swimming past. Old Wharf Motueka” was painted at a plein air painting outing to a decommissioned historic wharf in Motueka, NZ. In the morning when I arrived at the location gloomy black clouds had followed me and sure enough it started raining soon. This painting was done in 2024 when I took the ferry from Mapua to Rabbit Island with two fellow artists. We painted the view of the wharf when a weka (New Zealand flightless bird) came by and stole Jo’s art supplies. The art supplies were recovered quickly as the bird discovered that they were not eatable and dropped everything while fleeing the scene.
