Milo

During winter … when plein air painting is not so convenient… Nicole likes to focus on still life painting. Last winter she chose the theme “Kiwi Classics” or “Kiwiana”. In this selection Nicole is pointing out some typical Kiwi food items and the Buzzy Bee, an iconic Kiwi toy. “Even my kids played with it!” she explains. Being a collector of tins she finds that the typical Kiwiana products show the pride and thoughtfulness with which they were created. For…

Vegemite

During winter … when plein air painting is not so convenient… I like to focus on still life painting. Last winter I chose the theme “Kiwi Classics” or “Kiwiana”. In this selection I show some typical Kiwi food items and the Buzzy Bee, an iconic Kiwi toy. However! New Zealanders are probably a little confused by calling Vegemite a Kiwiana product. It’s true, only Australia produces Vegemite now. New Zealand did produce it for a while, but not any more…

Riwaka Inlet

Riwaka Inlet is one of Nicole’s plein air paintings. The plein air painting group visited Riwaka and painted at the end of Wharf Road. This time, instead of painting the boat sheds, Nicole looked over the inlet towards the Richmond hills. Since the Nelson Bay is very shallow at the inlet, the sea forms little channels at low tide. This painting is one of Nicole’s little gems painted on location with the palette knife. Riwaka Inlet, oil, 6" x 8",…

Broadgreen Historic House

This painting shows Nicole’s palette knife interpretation of the Broadgreen Historic House in Stoke/Nelson, New Zealand. The various colours applied in thick palette knife strokes have to work together through tonal values to depict the image of this old homestead with its picket fence and the flowers and bushes in front of it. Broadgreen Historic House Oil on board 10 x 12 inches (34.5 x 27cm) Click here for more information.

Tulips

The work is about the flowers as well as the material “paint”. The paint is applied with thick impasto palette knife strokes. Each colour stroke has its individual importance and reflects different hues, but then connects through tonal values to form an image. Both paintings, Tulips and Daffodils, relate to each other in this approach. “You have to feel your way into it. I have the idea of a subject in my head, but I can’t predict the way the paint is applied…
