About the Artwork

The work is about the flowers as well as the material “paint”. The paint is applied with thick impasto palette knife strokes. Each colour stroke has its individual importance and reflects different hues, but then connects through tonal values to form an image. Both paintings, Tulips and Daffodils, relate to each other in this approach. “You have to feel your way into it. I have the idea of a subject in my head, but I can’t predict the way the paint is applied or what colour is used. It’s a step by step communication between my palette, my colour mixing and the way the individual knife strokes talk to each other as they are placed on the canvas. Sometimes I have to step back after every single palette knife stroke before I can decide where the next stroke is going to be, what colour to choose as well as the saturation and tonal value. There is a lot of walking back and forth involved, I can tell you that!”
